Tujuh konsep utama pembelajaran kontekstual, yaitu:  

Constructivis

• Belajar adalah proses aktif mengonstruksi pengetahuan dari abstraksi pengalaman alami maupun manusiawi, yang dilakukan secara pribadi dan sosial untuk mencari makna dengan memproses informasi sehingga dirasakan masuk akal sesuai dengan kerangka berpikir yang dimilik
• Belajar berarti menyediakan kondisi agar memungkinkan peserta didik membangun sendiri pengetahuannya 
• Kegiatan belajar dikemas menjadi proses mengonstruksi pengetahu-an, bukan menerima pengetahuan sehingga belajar dimulai dari apa yang diketahui peserta didik. Peserta didik menemukan ide dan pengetahuan (konsep, prinsip) baru, menerapkan ide-ide, kemudian peserta didik mencari strategi belajar yang efektif agar mencapai kompetensi dan memberikan kepuasan atas penemuannya itu. 

Inquiry

• Siklus inkuiri: observasi dimulai dengan bertanya, mengajukan hipotesis, mengumpulkan data, dan menarik simpulan.
• Langkah-langkah inkuiri dengan merumuskan masalah, melakukan  observasi, analisis data, kemudian mengomunikasikan hasilnya 

Questioning

• Berguna bagi guru untuk: mendorong, membimbing dan menilai peserta didik; menggali informasi tentang pemahaman, perhatian, dan pengetahuan peserta didik.
• Berguna bagi peserta didik sebagai salah satu teknik dan strategi belajar.

Learning Community

• Dilakukan melalui pembelajaran kolaboratif -Belajar dilakukan dalam kelompok-kelompok kecil sehingga kemampuan sosial dan komunikasi berkembang

Modelling

• Berguna sebagai contoh yang baik yang dapat ditiru oleh peserta didik seperti cara menggali informasi, demonstrasi, dan lain-lain.
